Beginning the week of September 15, 2025, northbound traffic on Deerfoot Trail between the Anderson/Bow Bottom on-ramp and Ivor Strong Bridge will be shifted to the southbound lanes in preparation for bridge demolition on northbound Deerfoot Trail.
The weekend of September 19-22, 2025, the on-ramps from Anderson Road SE and Bow Bottom Trail SE to northbound Deerfoot Trail will be temporarily closed. This closure is necessary to ensure the safe demolition of the existing bridge on northbound Deerfoot Trail.
Once the demolition work is completed, the on-ramps will reopen.
Please see the attached map for details.
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES ON DEERFOOT TRAIL
To prepare for upcoming bridge demolition on northbound Deerfoot Trail, the northbound and southbound lanes along Deerfoot Trail, between Douglasdale Boulevard/24 Street and Anderson Road, and Bow Bottom Trail interchanges, will be altered.
The northbound lanes will be closed to traffic. Traffic travelling in both directions will use the lanes dedicated to existing southbound traffic while work occurs on the northbound lanes. This traffic shift is required to accommodate the work and ensure the safety of the workers. Following demolition of the existing bridge on northbound Deerfoot Trail, a new bridge will be constructed. The revised traffic pattern will remain in place while the northbound bridge is under construction. Please see the map below.
RAMP CLOSED FOR DEMOLITION ACTIVITIES
During bridge demolition, Anderson Road/Bow Bottom Trail off-ramps will be closed, and a long-duration detour will be implemented to protect the public from the demolition activities. A lane alignment on the Anderson Road ramp will also be implemented to minimize traffic impacts.
TIMELINES
The demolition work will occur over the weekend, and the ramp will be closed at 9:00pm on Friday, September 19 and will be reopened by 6:00am on Monday, September 22, 2025.
OVERNIGHT WORK
Overnight demolition work will take place, and crews will be working 24 hours/day during this closure to reduce the duration of these ramp closures and the impact to the travelling public.
ANTICIPATED IMPACTS
Residents in adjacent areas can expect to see nighttime construction lighting and may hear construction noise from the demolition activities.
ALTERNATE ROUTE PLANNING
Members of the public are advised to plan accordingly, use alternate routes and plan for additional travel time during the closure.
For traffic information, please visit 511.alberta.ca.
SPEED REDUCTION
There will be a speed reduction to 50 km/hr on Bow Bottom Trail SE and Anderson Road SE on approaches to the work zone.
For your safety, please obey all construction signs when travelling through the improvement area.
