IVOR STRONG BRIDGE

NEW BRIDGE OPENING AND TRAFFIC CONFIGURATION CHANGE

Beginning the week of July 26, 2026, the newly constructed Ivor Strong Bridge will be opened to traffic. All southbound Deerfoot Trail traffic will be transitioned onto the new bridge structure.

As part of this change:

  • The pre-existing bridge will continue to carry northbound traffic only.
  • Rehabilitation work will proceed on the pre-existing bridge.
  • Traffic control measures, including temporary barriers and signage, will be in place to safely guide motorists through the updated configuration.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

BRIDGE REHABILITATION WORK

Rehabilitation work on the northbound bridge will include removal of the existing concrete median barrier, expansion joint retrofitting, and removal of existing streetlight poles, Renovation work will be confined to the bridge deck and will not impact the bridge piers, abutments, or require in river work.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION

New road construction, primarily in the median between Ivor Strong Bridge and the Douglasdale exit will include excavation and grading, paving, concrete barrier installation, storm drainage, and street lighting installation.

OVERNIGHT WORK

The construction activities related to this traffic reconfiguration will continue during the daytime and nighttime.

TIMELINES

Work is set to start the week of July 26, 2026 and is anticipated to continue until October 2026.

SPEED REDUCTION

All road users are reminded to proceed with caution, follow posted signage, and allow extra travel time as we implement this traffic shift.

ANTICIPATED IMPACTS

Residents in nearby areas may notice increased noise, construction lighting, and occasional traffic delays due to bridge renovation activities.
