IVOR STRONG BRIDGE
SUMMER 2026 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
What’s New and Completed?
The Ivor Strong Bridge’s west approach slab was recently completed; this is a structural component used at the ends of bridges that provides a smooth transition between the bridge deck and adjacent roadways. All waterproofing works for the approach slabs and bridge decks have also been completed.
Bridge Rail Installation
The bridge deck rail installation was substantially completed in mid-April. These railings are an important safety feature which help prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway. Further finishing work on the rails will be completed following paving of the bridge deck in the coming weeks.
Pier Form Removal
During bridge construction, temporary forms (moulds) are installed around bridge piers to support and shape concrete as it is poured and cured. Once curing is completed, the temporary forms are removed. Removal of these forms has been ongoing as progress on bridge piers continues.
West Abutment Wingwall Barriers – Rebar Installation, Concrete Pour, and Cure
Barrier walls are constructed along the edges of bridges to contain traffic and redirect vehicles to the roadway if they lose control, preventing them from going over the edge of the bridge, On the west end of the bridge, recent work has been focused on building barrier walls, including the installation of rebar pouring of concrete.
Preparation for expansion joints
Preparatory work for installing expansion joints on the East and West sides of the bridge was completed at the beginning of May, Expansion joints are a critical component of a bridge and allow the structure to expand and contract in response to temperature changes, traffic loads, and other environmental factors. Bridges are large structures made of materials like steel and concrete, which naturally expand in hot weather and contract in cold weather. Without expansion joints, these movements could cause cracking, buckling, or structural damage.
Deck Paving
Backfilling the approach on the east and west ends to allow paving of the bridge deck and approach deck is now completed.
What’s Ongoing?
Bridge Rail Adjustments
Bridge guardrails are being adjusted to final elevation, and base plate grouting is underway. This work ensures the bridge guardrails sit at the correct height and are properly aligned when the bridge surface is fully complete. Bridge guardrails as an important safety component of a bridge and must meet height safety standards to provide proper protection for vehicles and pedestrians when the bridge is operational.
Street Lighting
Installation of light poles on the new bridge structure is ongoing.
